I
was born in America. In college I studied Russian literature, language
and culture. After I finished mhy degree I lived, studied and worked in
Moscow and St. Petersburg. Although I was born in America, I feel I truly
became who I am today while living in Russia. I consider myself both American
and Russian. The Russian concept of motherland differs greatly from the
American concept. In Russia it is not only the place where you were born
but also is based in its religious, historical, and literary traditions.
The motherland is a pure and strong idea in Russia. In America the concept
of motherland is not as clearly expressed, perhaps due to its relatively
short history. The understanding of our motherland is through the media,
primarily television. These stamps show the differences in understanding
of "motherland" in Russia and America.
